HEDGE-IoT is a European research and innovation project developing secure, interoperable and intelligent digital solutions for future energy systems. Electricity Campus Arnhem serves as the project’s Dutch demonstration site. Here, smart meters, building management systems, solar panels, batteries, heat pumps and EV chargers are connected within a shared digital ecosystem. The project tests how standardised data exchange, edge computing and AI can enable coordinated energy management, unlock flexibility and reduce pressure on the electricity grid. The campus provides a real-life environment for validating these solutions across multiple buildings and energy assets. More information can be found at hedgeiot.eu
Fieldlab Collective EMS (C-EMS) develops and tests how multiple energy management systems can operate together within a local energy system. At Electricity Campus Arnhem, different buildings, energy assets and EMS providers are connected in a real-life test environment. The fieldlab focuses on interoperability, cybersecurity and coordinated control, enabling energy flexibility to be shared across organisational and technical boundaries. Its aim is to validate vendor-independent solutions, accelerate their practical application and contribute to future standards and certification for collective energy management.
ELSA Lab AI for Energy and Sustainability (AI4ES) investigates how artificial intelligence can support smart energy management in a responsible and sustainable way. Electricity Campus Arnhem provides a practical environment for exploring and validating AI applications for decentralised energy systems. Alongside technical performance, the project considers legal, ethical, environmental, economic and societal aspects, including cybersecurity, privacy, data ownership and accountability. The aim is to help organisations apply AI in ways that improve forecasting, coordination and flexibility while contributing to a secure, fair and sustainable energy system.
Alliander’s AI FlexLab develops and tests artificial-intelligence applications for managing flexibility within the electricity system. At Electricity Campus Arnhem, operational data and physical energy assets provide a practical environment for forecasting energy flows and coordinating generation, consumption, storage and charging. The lab investigates how AI can help use existing grid capacity more efficiently, prevent congestion and support automated, grid-aware control of flexible assets. By validating these methods under realistic conditions, the project helps accelerate their application within local and wider energy systems.
